![]() Life of Lou E. Loons’ Mascot Bares All in Exclusive Interview Lou E. Loon, the Ambassador of Fun for the Great Lakes Loons, sat down recently with the editor of LoonsNest, the official magazine of the Great Lakes Loons, to talk about his life and his rise to fame. LoonsNest (LN): Lou E., it’s great to have you in Mid-Michigan. Tell us, how does it feel to be the most famous feathered celebrity in the area? Lou E.: I’m having the time of my life. I’ve met thousands of people and everyone is so welcoming. I couldn’t have picked a better place to call home. LN: So give us the background, Lou E., what was your family like? Lou E: I’m from a small family of Common Loons. We grew up in a simple nest on Lake Huron near Tawas Point. My parents were mainly divers. They were great. Dad could spot a crayfish 20 ft. away. Mom was good too. She could nab a frog with her beak in one fast move. LN: Where are they now? Lou E.: They head south for the winter. Most loons migrate to a large body of water when it gets cold. We talked last week. They’re doing great. LN: It sounds like you’re proud of your parents. But you didn’t follow in their footsteps. Why? Lou E.: Well … diving’s good for most loons, but I always wanted more. I’ve always admired birds that make it big. Donald Duck is one of my idols. He’s a real hero in my book. Big Bird’s another one – that’s one smart bird! And Woodstock – there wasn’t a more loyal friend to Snoopy and Charlie Brown. So ever since I was small I wanted a life like that. LN: How did you find out about the Loons’ job? Lou E.: My agent heard about it. He called me right away. Of course, I dove at the chance. LN: How was the interview? Lou E.: I was nervous at first but then I got comfortable (they were very kind to provide a nest for me to freshen up in). We hit it off right away. I think we all knew from the beginning that I was perfect for the job. The rest, as they say, is history. LN: What do you think makes you so good at being a mascot? Lou E.: I’m a people bird. Put a few humans in a stadium and I can’t stay away. I’m also a good dancer, I love public appearances and I’m addicted to playground equipment. LN: So what’s next for Lou E. Loon? Lou E.: I have a lot of kids to meet. I’ll spend the summer shaking hands and giving hugs. Did you see Lou E.’s Lookout? I bet Tweety Bird doesn’t have a play area named for him. I’m going to be there a lot and I hope all of the kids will go there too. We’re going to have a great summer. LN: One last question. What does the “E.” stand for … Edgar? Elliott? Egor? Lou E.: The ‘E’ stands for “Entertainment.” My full name is Louis Entertainment Loon. LN: Well there you have it folks! Well Louis, will you come back and talk to LoonsNest again soon? Lou E.: Any time. You know where to find me! |
